Preparing the Vertebrate Animal Section (VAS)

The Vertebrate Animal Section (VAS), is required for use of live vertebrate animals, tissues, or the production of antibodies when applying for grant applications, contract proposals and cooperative agreements where they relate to animal use.  The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) recently released a short VAS factsheet to aid in preparation of this section.  Five key points are listed that are important to address in your application:

1.  Description of animals and how they will be used

2.  Justifications for use of animals

3.  Veterinary care

4.  Provisions to minimize discomfort, distress, pain, and injury

5.  Euthanasia

Explanations of each of these points should be provided for each performance site.  More information can be found on the Worksheet for Review of the Vertebrate Animal Section (VAS).
