Food product safety in India

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) plans to set up food safety laboratories in every 4-5 districts that will carry out basic food safety testing and larger laboratories to test for contaminants including residues and heavy metals. Each district will now also have its own food safety office. In addition, a National Food Science and Risk Assessment Centre will be established that will “conduct regulatory research and risk assessment”. This Centre will be the repository of food standards. Other changes being implemented include strengthening the national food safety helpline and creating a National Food Safety Training Institute (NFSTI).
