Nature reports the Minnesota Department of Health has started destroying archival blood samples that were the focus of a lawsuit over the unauthorized retention and use of specimens collected from newborns for genetic screening. The state had been collecting the specimens since 1997 without seeking parental consent for non-diagnostic uses such as research and validation testing. Over one million samples will ultimately be destroyed.
