A recent report published by the Friends of the Earth (FOE) calls for a “moratorium on the release and commercial use of synthetic organisms and products”. See the press release here. A report has also been generated, entitled “The Principles for the Oversight of Synthetic Biology”, that has been endorsed by 111 supporting organizations from around the world. These groups recommend the moritorium “until we have established a public interest research agenda, examined alternatives, developed the proper regulations and put into place rigorous biosafety measures”.
