bioRxiv, modeled after the popular preprint server arXiv for astrophysicists and theoretical physicists, has just come online. In 2003, arXiv began accepting quantitative biology preprints and in the past two years the volume of papers posted has increased sharply, according to a recent news item at Nature.com. arXiv does not plan to expand into other areas of biology however.
Enter bioRxiv
Biologists generally have been slow to embrace the preprint publishing trend. Some journals may still not allow pre-publication although many are adjusting their policies to support the practice. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is covering the cost of bioRiv for now. There are certainly implications to bear in mind for research administrators here – especially with respect to intellectual property management.
