According to the Home Office (UK), animals’ subjected to scientific procedures rose again for the second year, up 2% in 2011 (up 3% in 2010). This amounted to 3.79 million procedures last year. The statistics for 2011 were just released and are available as a full report or in a press-release format here. The Animals in Science Regulation Unit Annual Report 2011 was also recently released.
Over all findings include:
Genetically modified animals underwent 1.62 million procedures
Some species procedures increased including, cats (+26%), pigs (+37%), birds (+14%) and fish (+15%)
There was an increase (+2%) in the numbers of procedures for safety testing (toxicology)
